For centuries, the people of Gemlandia have harvested gems — powerful resources that provide a source of energy for their civilization and culture. Since the end of the Great Gem Blender War, the island has been divided into 10 states, each state controlling the harvest and industry of a different gem type. For 100 years Gemlandia has found itself in relative peace, with citizens free to enjoy life, pursue careers, and engage in popular sports like Gem Blender Battles!

Hundreds of years ago, the denizens of Gemlandia made a great discovery. By combining gems, they could gain access to unique powers and abilities, depending on the types of gems being used. This process is known as “blending” and the users of blends are known as — Gem Blenders!

The relationship between gems and blendology can become quite complex. Each gem has its own unique history and powers, although blendologists typically agree on 3 distinct categories: elemental gems, transcendental gems, and physical gems.

The three primary elemental gems are naturally occurring on Gemlandia. Due to their raw energy, they do not blend with each other unless assisted by a non-primary gem type.

Secondary elemental gems rarely occur naturally, but can be created by processing primary gems into more stable forms. Currently, only two secondary gems have been discovered — Cryogems made from stabilized Aquagems, and Electrogems made from stabilized Pyrogems.

Transcendental gems aren’t created so much as “encountered.” Outside of the pious bishops and mages that perform the rituals, these gems are shrouded in mystery. Because of their polarity, Transcendental gems can never be blended together.

Physical gems contain the energy of fossilized animals. These gems give the user a physical attribute, either wings from the Aerogem or horns from the Caprogem. Similar to the transcendental gems, physical gems cannot be blended together, as the toll it would take on the blender’s body would be too much to bear.

Due to the inability of transcendental and physical gems to blend with their own types, blenders naturally tend to use one type of physical gem and one type of transcendental gem. These 4 different possible combinations are known colloquially as “The Four Schools of Blending.”

The Fowl school consists of blends that use both Nocturnagems and Aerogems. The most mischievous of the four schools, Fowl blends enjoy sneaky tactics, with abilities that keep opponents on their toes before hitting them with a surprise attack.
The Angel school consists of blends that use both Luciogems and Aerogems. The most collaborative of the four schools, Angel blends do best when they work together, with abilities that synergize and grow stronger with a little help from their friends.
The Ram school consists of blends that use both Nocturnagems and Caprogems. The most physical of the four schools, Ram blends aren't afraid to get their hands dirty, with abilities that increase their strength, defense, and damage output.
The Herald school consists of blends that use both Luciogems and Caprogems. The most intellectual of the four schools, Herald blends have a penchant for complexity, with abilities that reward careful planning and execution.
