GEMLANDIA

For centuries, the people of Gemlandia have harvested gems — powerful resources that provide a source of energy for their civilization and culture. Since the end of the Great Gem Blender War, the island has been divided into 10 states, each state controlling the harvest and industry of a different gem type. For 100 years Gemlandia has found itself in relative peace, with citizens free to enjoy life, pursue careers, and engage in popular sports like Gem Blender Battles!

Gemlandia

Gemlandia is a vast island-continent brimming with lively inhabitants that reside in its 10 states. Across each region, gems are mined and collected for a variety of purposes. In fact, the inhabitants of Gemlandia use gems for just about everything — from cooking and cleaning to sport and war. Some gifted individuals can combine the energies of multiple gems to use powerful transformations called blends — these are Gem Blenders. Gem blending is common practice and an integral part of the culture and economy of the states that make up mainland Gemlandia. Gem Blenders form teams to participate in Gemlandia’s most popular sport: Blender Battles. Millions tune in to watch the annual Blender Bowl, where Gemlandia's top blenders face off and compete for the championship title. Despite a tumultuous history, Gemlandia is a nation where art, technology, economy, and style flourish.

Fashion City

The style capital of Gemlandia, where trends are being minted at every moment and each street doubles as a runway. Known for its towering skyline, myriad trendsetting clubs, and Gemlandia’s largest gem blending arena, Fashion City has much to offer for those from all walks of life. The sprawling metropolis has many distinct neighborhoods that offer everything from fine dining and live entertainment to federal institutions and gem investment banks. Fashion City’s rise corresponded with the end of the Great Gem Blender war and the proliferation of Electrogems, bringing forth the major electricity grid that powers the city. Fashion City residents are known for their apathetic attitudes, but that's only half-true. Just don't stop in the middle of the street to check where you’re going.

Cone Forest

Known for its dense evergreen landscape, the entire state is a forest. Many small towns are scattered throughout the region, all sharing an appreciation for nature and the outdoors. Terragems are harvested from the canopies of the forest’s Great Conifers. The forest’s undergrowth serves as the habitat for a range of flora and fauna, along with plenty of Terragem blends. The state is Gemlandia’s capital for winter sports like Cryoblading and Rime Piercing. The Cone Expressway runs across the region, connecting Pinnacle Heights City to Nocturna Point — this is the primary path to get to Nocturna Point from the rest of Gemlandia because the terrains of Skyward Mountain and Tremor Ridge are so difficult to pass. Cone Forest inhabitants all share a common mindset: sit back, relax, and take a moment to enjoy the intricacies of life.

Lucio Fields

Largely rural, Lucio Fields is known for its many pastoral villages as well as being home to the Seminary of Lucio, the headquarters of the most prolific religion in Gemlandia. The other states of Gemlandia rely heavily on Lucio Fields for its food exports, especially Milk Herald milk. Lucio Fields is scattered with many small towns of inhabitants that live simple lives, taking advantage of the fertile soil and sprawling prairies. As the state is rich in Luciogem energy, many communities dedicate themselves to collecting and honoring these mystical gems, subsequently resulting in a pervasive problem of addiction to the Luciogem’s alluring effects.

Royal Village

The Royal Village was designated as a state to preserve Gemlandia’s royal heritage after the formation of Gemlandia United. At its center stands the Crystal Palace, a gleaming architectural marvel and symbol of the Royal Family’s contentious past. While the Royal Family still lives in the palace, they no longer have any governing power. Members of the family often travel throughout Gemlandia, performing various ceremonial and social duties. The only remaining functional remnant of the royal era is the Royal Guard, an army made up of Crystal Reflectors, Shard Busters, and Luster Strikers. Although not the same as it was at its peak, the army is still one of the most highly skilled Gem Blender armies in Gemlandia. Large icebergs line the waters off the icy northern tip of the state, from which all of the nation’s Cryogems are harvested.

Nocturna Point

Nocturna Point has often been a source of mystery and intrigue. Legend warns people not to visit the region because so many have gone missing or been converted to dark religious cults. Nocturna Point’s northern half houses a large desert with purple sand. Records of the Purple Desert describe the area’s magical and mysterious properties. Those who enter are said to lose track of time and space – one could be traveling for an hour and it only feels like minutes, or vice versa – not to mention reports of hallucinations, mirages, and spiritual visions. The bulk of the state’s population lives in the southern half, referred to as the Nocturni. The Nocturni are an insular people who dedicate themselves to mining Nocturnagems from the Purple Desert, giving them firm control over Gemlandia’s entire Nocturnagem market. Nocturna Point has the largest daily temperature swing of any Gemlandian state. The Nocturni are well-adapted to the extreme climate, but any travellers should be warned to pack appropriately.

Resort Beach

Just south of Fashion City across the Pylon Bridge, Resort Beach is a popular vacation destination for those trying to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. It is known for having beautiful weather and exciting tourist sites. Its West shore is lined with a variety of resorts while its East shore is dubbed the Aquaboarding capital of Gemlandia. Other notable sites include the Resort Beach Botanical Gardens, the Great Aquagem Reef, and the always popular Gull Aquapark. The archipelago south of the mainland is home to large swaths of preserved natural jungle – with the topmost island containing a large system of partially underwater caves.

Skyward Crest

Heavy use of the Angel blend prompted a migration to the summit of Skyward Mountain, the tallest point in Gemlandia. Since this initial settling, it has developed into a thriving community dedicated to Aerogem blends. The region is quite dangerous, especially if you can’t fly. Only a few brave explorers have ascended to the summit of Skyward Mountain solo – most have died trying. As the elevation is high, nearly all residents of Skyward Crest are Gem Blenders and very capable with Aerogems. In fact, it is assumed that all children of Skyward Crest will attend the AeroForce Academy and join the elite squad of aerial fighters known as the AeroForce. The AeroForce, established during The Great Gem Blender War to fight against the Royal Army, can be credited for the creation of iconic blends such as Fume Blitzer, Fleet Reacher, and Roost Bomber. Although Skyward Mountain is the most well-known, Skyward Crest is home to a large range of other mountains. Echo Peak is known for its unique curvature that greatly amplifies particular sound frequencies, while Silver Peak, encircled by rain clouds, houses one of the most diverse ecosystems in all of Gemlandia.

Tri-Gem Domain

Tri-Gem Domain is a region designated as a no-blending zone. To ensure such measures are taken, the only permitted gems are Aquagems,Terragems, and Pyrogems because they alone cannot be blended. The region’s harsh laws relate to its philosophy that the ability to blend gems creates an inherent inequality, and is often misused by those in power. Known for their prolific rules and regulations, the Tri-Gem legislative body is based on the southern island. While often characterized as a more primitive offshoot of mainland Gemlandia, Tri-Gem Domain has developed in a different, more egalitarian direction than its continental counterpart.

Pinnacle Heights

Pinnacle Heights is the second most populated state of Gemlandia. Pinnacle Heights City, located at the northernmost part of the state, presents itself as a manageable alternative to Fashion City. At the center stands the QWN Tower, the tallest building in all of Gemlandia. The southern part of the state is largely suburban, attracting families because of the state’s renowned education system. Schools like Pinnacle Prep, one of Gemlandia’s premier schools for Gem Blenders, and The School of Gemology and Blendology, Gemlandia’s most rigorous academic institution, bring in many eager students from across the nation. In addition to being the top state for academia, Pinnacle Heights is Gemlandia’s hub of technological innovation. Pinnacle Heights students vie for competitive internships at newfangled tech startups that are at the forefront of Gemlandian engineering.

Tremor Ridge

As the least habitable state of Gemlandia, Tremor Ridge features an extremely dangerous landscape. Known for heavy volcanic and seismic activity, as well as an extremely rocky shore that often gets hit by tidal waves, only the bravest individuals have explored the remote parts of this region. Tremor Town, located just across the Lucio Fields/Tremor Ridge border, is the only population center of the state. While small, Tremor Town has a long history of producing some of Gemlandia’s toughest and most resolute Gem Blenders. In the middle of Tremor Ridge lies a vast desert. Home to several Transcendentalist ruin sites, the desert attracts archeologists, treasure hunters, and mystics alike. Notably, Tremor Ridge is where the earliest traces of Gemlandia’s inhabitants have been found.

Far Island

While it is not a state, Far Island functions as a high-security prison for Gemlandia. The island has no official governing body. However, a family of wardens runs the prison and organizes the transport of criminals from mainland Gemlandia through a large ocean barge. The island is also barren, completely lacking any gem deposits, making it a perfect location to keep criminal Gem Blenders captive.

Blending

Hundreds of years ago, the denizens of Gemlandia made a great discovery. By combining gems, they could gain access to unique powers and abilities, depending on the types of gems being used. This process is known as “blending” and the users of blends are known as — Gem Blenders!

The relationship between gems and blendology can become quite complex. Each basic gem has its own unique history and powers, although blendologists typically agree on 3 distinct categories: elemental gems, transcendental gems, and physical gems.

GEMS

The three primary elemental gems are naturally occurring on Gemlandia. Due to their raw energy, Aquagems, Terragems, and Pyrogems do not blend with each other unless assisted by a non-primary gem type.

Secondary elemental gems rarely occur naturally, but can be created by processing primary gems into more stable forms. Currently, only two secondary gems have been discovered — Cryogems made from stabilized Aquagems, and Electrogems made from stabilized Pyrogems.

Transcendental gems aren’t created so much as “encountered.” Outside of the pious bishops and mages that perform the rituals, Luciogems and Nocturnagems are shrouded in mystery. Because of their polarity, Transcendental gems cannot be blended together except in particular circumstances.

Physical gems contain the energy of fossilized animals. These gems give the user a physical attribute, either wings from the Aerogem or horns from the Caprogem. Similar to transcendental gems, if physical gems were to be blended together, an abominable monster wouold be created.

Rotating Aquagem

Aquagem

The Aquagem is an elemental gem that contains the energy of water. It was one of the first gems to be harnessed by humans, and proved especially useful for developing societies in allowing for the purification and control of water supplies. There are slight variations between Aquagems depending on what body of water they come from. Blends often result in an aptitude for swimming and the ability to shift the state of water between solid, liquid, and vapor.

"Tides shift always."

Rotating Terragem

Terragem

Terragem deposits act as fertilizer for a variety of plants because their stored energy fortifies the connection between Earth and biological matter. When harnessed by humans, the Terragem results in increased muscle mass and a greater sensitivity to one's biological surroundings. Essential to farmers for growing crops, this elemental gem continues to be a major factor in the development of food sources for communities across Gemlandia.

"Strong roots, long life."

Rotating Pyrogem

Pyrogem

Often associated with the ability to create fire, the true power of the Pyrogem resides in its stored kinetic energy. This energy makes for increased speed and faster reflexes, resulting in a variety of aggressive blends. Along with the Aquagem and the Terragem, the Pyrogem is the third primary elemental gem. The speed and efficiency forged by the Pyrogem remain critical for strong and functioning economies.

"Internal warmth persists."

Rotating Cryogem

Cryogem

With an almost identical composition to the Aquagem, the Cryogem has a more stable crystalline structure, allowing for the manipulation of ice. Cryogem deposits form on the bottom of icebergs, making them particularly difficult and dangerous to harvest because of the freezing water temperatures. Since the Cryogem's discovery, it has been associated with Gemlandia's Royal Family and their now defunct empire.

"Time freezes fate."

Rotating Aerogem

Aerogem

Found primarily on mountain peaks, Aerogem deposits form as close to the sky as possible. The gem itself has little mass, and is thought to be composed of up to 90% air. Aerogems are physical gems that contain the energy of winged animals, often blending to result in drastic changes to the body such as hollow bones, wings, talons, and feathers. Flight is the key ability gained by Aerogem blends, followed by increased agility and a sensitivity to changes in weather.

"Fly higher."

Rotating Electrogem

Electrogem

The Electrogem is a secondary elemental gem that contains static energy. It has a similar composition to the Pyrogem, however, resulting blends often focus on manipulating stored energy rather than expending it directly. A recent discovery of an abundance of Electrogem mines prompted a period of rapid urban growth. Touching Electrogems often causes electric shock, but is only harmful when large quantities are present.

"Electricity is efficiency"

Rotating Luciogem

Luciogem

The natural complement to the Nocturnagem, the Luciogem is a transcendental gem that is equally obscure. While difficult to harness its energy, touching the gem produces feelings of comfort and warmth. Excessive use of the gem often leaves individuals entranced and lethargic, addicted to the effects. Throughout history, the Luciogem has spurred many religious followings, honoring the mystical nature of the gem.

"Pray to light"

Rotating Caprogem

Caprogem

The Caprogem contains stored energy of horned animals. It serves as the natural counterpart to the Aerogem, resulting in blends which are better adapted to solid terrain such as mountains, forests, and plains. Blends often result in physical changes such as horns and hooves, in addition to other benefits such as increased strength, stability, and power. Gemologists believe that Caprogems were formed from the horns of goats and rams after thousands of years of compression and crystallization.

"Stubborn like a goat."

Rotating Nocturnagem

Nocturnagem

A difficult gem to wield, the Nocturnagem is a transcendental gem that contains dark energy. Shrouded in mystery, many things are still unknown about its powers. Nocturnagem deposits only appear in remote locations after the sun has set, and contact with the gem often results in memory loss and nightmares. It is believed that the Nocturnagem and the Luciogem are halves to the same whole, balancing the gem energy spectrum from opposite poles.

"Darkness consumes."

Four Schools

Due to the difficulty of transcendental and physical gems blending with their own types, blenders naturally tend to use one type of physical gem and one type of transcendental gem. These 4 different possible combinations are known colloquially as “The Four Schools of Blending.”

FOWL

The Fowl school consists of blends that use both Nocturnagems and Aerogems. The most mischievous of the four schools, Fowl blends enjoy sneaky tactics, with abilities that keep opponents on their toes before hitting them with a surprise attack.

FOWL

ANGEL

The Angel school consists of blends that use both Luciogems and Aerogems. The most collaborative of the four schools, Angel blends do best when they work together, with abilities that synergize and grow stronger with a little help from their friends.

ANGEL

RAM

The Ram school consists of blends that use both Nocturnagems and Caprogems. The most physical of the four schools, Ram blends aren't afraid to get their hands dirty, with abilities that increase their strength, defense, and damage output.

RAM

HERALD

The Herald school consists of blends that use both Luciogems and Caprogems. The most intellectual of the four schools, Herald blends have a penchant for complexity, with abilities that reward careful planning and execution.
